Sports Environment Alliance to host its second edition of the #SEASummit 2017 in Melbourne

Following the great success of the inaugural #SEASummit in 2016, the Sports Environment Alliance (SEA) will host on the 14th of November 2017 its second edition of this innovative sports and sustainability summit.

The #SEASummit 2017 will take place at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. This state-of-the-art stadium is probably one of the most sustainable venues in the world, a great example of sustainability-in-action in terms of pollution prevention, air emission minimisation and efficient resource consumption.

The aim of the #SEASummit 2017 is to raise more and more awareness on how the sports industry can limit its negative impact on the environment. This year’s edition will not only focus on sports within Australasia, but will emphasise the need for developing a more constructive and collaborative approach within the international sports community to put in place more effective, global sustainability initiatives.

#SEASummit 2017 intends to act as a catalyst to attract not only delegates from the sports industry but also like-minded people coming from other sectors like environment, innovation, government as well as service providers, associations and more.

Sport is a powerful vehicle for supporting sustainability challenging objectives of reducing energy, water and material use. With this ambition in mind, the #SEASummit 2017 will be also hosting the #SEAChangeSolutions Award ceremony. This award’s laudable intention is in fact to showcase and celebrate all the best examples and achievements from sporting clubs, venues/facilities and organising bodies to minimise their environmental, social and economic impact within their local communities and to promote continual improvement.

Sports Environment Alliance (SEA) is a not-for-profit, membership based organisation focused on providing the sport industry with the knowledge and network to become environmental stewards and inspire others (fans, commercial partners, government, etc.) to do the same.

SEA strategy for tackling environmental health is to use a two-way synergic approach: ‘the bottom-up’, starting from sports at its grassroots and using both education and empowerment to enhance awareness and knowledge; ‘the top-down’, working at the elite level by developing a set of relevant case studies, sustainability focused research and aspiration.

Dr. Sheila Nguyen (SEA Executive Director) shared with us her vision regarding the future of sports and sustainability:

“The sport industry needs the environment, and right now, the environment needs a loud, sexy, high profile voice and I believe sport holds the megaphone”.

We definitely endorse her inspiring and motivating statement.
